When I first conceived the notion to write this series on Food Vices (aka The Seven Deadly Sins of a Foodie), I really wondered if I could pull it off. Up to this point and as luck would have it, it hasn’t been too difficult to associate the sins of Gluttony (duh, that one was easy), Sloth, Pride and Greed to the world of gastronomy.
I’m down to Envy, Wrath and Lust to round out the series and hope my luck holds! I feel that Envy will be the most difficult of all the sins to conquer within this context, so I’ll save her for last. This week, I’ll tackle Lust.
The look on my face here pretty much says it all…
Diane Meets Meat Board at Toup’s Meatery in New Orleans
If nothing else, Lust is an intense yearning, and oh how I can yearn after food. In fact, if the whole truth be told, I can be downright obsessive about food. I get something in my head and will not be satisfied until my desire is fulfilled.
Case in point… When I saw Chef Isaac Toup in action on Top Chef, and heard about the meat board served at Toup’s Meatery in New Orleans, obsession set in. I was so obsessed that I planned, in part, a vacation around that meat board! I’d say that’s pretty damn Lusty. Can anyone relate? I hope so. I’d hate to think it’s just a me thing!
In addition to that sense of yearning associated with Lust, there’s also a perverse side to my food Lust. Not perverse in a lewd way, but rather I can just be down right obstinate. Like eating that entire meat board single-handedly! Of course I could say that I ate the whole thing because I didn’t want to be wasteful, but that would not be entirely true 🙂
I was so fixated on it that I didn’t stop until I’d finished it. That is not to say that I didn’t savor every bite, because quite the opposite is true. Chef Toup borders on a magician with charcuterie! (And charcuterie is an obsession of mine… see how I am!!!) It is to say that at times, I have no self control. I find myself wanting for too much of a good thing which is a bad thing.
Self Control is the virtuous side of Lust and therefore Self Control is required to launch a defensive against my food Lust. So Lust, let me introduce you to your new boss. His name is Self Control.
Food Vices Part V – Lust… thanks for visiting Palatable Life.
Be inspired,
Diane
P.S. I’m also a big fan of Manhattans and the one served at Toup’s comes not with the ubiquitous cherry but rather a piece of candied bacon!!!
